EMERGENCY CERTIFICATE APPLICATION GUIDELINES

About the Emergency Certificate (EC)

An Emergency Certificate (EC) is a one-way travel document issued for emergency travel only to Jamaica and is not generally recognized by other territories, as it is neither bar-coded nor does it have an expiry date. If the document is issued, the applicant will be required to do a passport renewal/replacement once they are in Jamaica.

Applications may be submitted in person by appointment: https://jaembassydcconsularservices.youcanbook.me/ or in our drop-box, or by mail.

The Embassy of Jamaica reserves the right to request additional documents in further support of an application. The issuance of an EC is not guaranteed.

Mailed‑In Applications

Please note that the Embassy of Jamaica will only process mailed‑in applications from the following five (5) states:

  • District of Columbia (D.C.)
  • Maryland (MD)
  • Virginia (VA)
  • California (CA)
  • Washington (WA)

Applicants residing in other states should refer to the Embassy’s service‑area guidance to determine whether their applications should be mailed to the Consulate General of Jamaica in New York or the Consulate General of Jamaica in Florida. Service Area Guidance
Applications mailed to the Embassy of Jamaica originating from states not listed above will be returned.

  • Demonstration of proof of emergency (document/s corresponding with the emergency for which the application is being made)

Application Fee & Processing Time

Application Fee

The application fee is $95 (including mailing fee) OR $75 (without mailing fee). Applicants may also submit a self‑addressed, pre‑paid envelope (that bears a tracking number) to facilitate the return of original documents.

Accepted methods of payment are cash or debit/credit card (a surcharge is applied by the banking machine used for debit/credit card transactions) for in‑person applications, or Money Order payable to the “Embassy of Jamaica” for mailed‑in applications.

Processing Time

The processing time for ALL Emergency Certificate (EC) applications is approximately 10 business days.

Important Guidelines for In‑Person Appointments

  • Only the applicant is allowed to be inside the interview room at the time of the scheduled appointment. All other visitors accompanying the applicant should remain within the waiting area. In the case of minor applicants, only the parent/legal guardian giving consent will be permitted to accompany the child to the interview room.
  • The use of cellphones in the interview room is strictly prohibited.
  • Please ensure that the relevant application form is printed and completed and all other supporting documents are on hand prior to the scheduled appointment time, to ensure the smooth and timely flow of appointments for the day. If your appointment time has begun and the application form is deemed incomplete by the Consular Officer conducting your appointment, you may be asked to return to the waiting area to complete the form and the next scheduled applicant will be called in to begin their interview, leading to delays in the processing of your application.
  • If you have a scheduled appointment and are no longer able to come in during the selected time slot, please reschedule or cancel your appointment through the booking site at least 24 hours before the scheduled appointment.

Advisory

The Embassy of Jamaica encourages all Jamaican nationals to ensure that their travel documents are up to date ahead of making travel arrangements. In the event of noncompliance, the Embassy will not be held responsible for any inconvenience caused.
